Giving support to others through community service has always been very important to me, and it is now a part of our family's mission.
I have been so blessed over the years through basketball. The truth is, I never expected to be here, and by many experts accounts I was not supposed to be here. Sure I was a very good basketball player. And like most young men, I had dreams of playing in the National Basketball Association. Through most of my younger years, I simply wanted to follow in the footsteps of my older brother Percy, who was a star football player in college. Percy had won a lot of awards in college and for a time was the starting linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. I worked hard every day in school and on the practice fields trying to get better so I could follow my dream of being successful like my brother.
Despite the success I had at Michigan State, where I was Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, I still was preparing for life after basketball. I was not sure if I would get my chance to play in the NBA. But I knew for sure that if I did get an opportunity, nobody would ever work harder or be more thankful for the chance.
And now today with my wife and children, I remain humbled and thankful for this opportunity. Each and every year, we as a family do community projects together to help others. We make a point of sharing our blessings with our neighbors.
I honestly believe that for the rest of my life, I will be a servant. It will be the best assist I can ever make.
